I've been photographing people across San Diego for over 10 years.

I've chased golden hour down cliffs I probably wasn't supposed to be on. I've hauled camera gear up mountain switchbacks in Lake Arrowhead before sunrise. I've stood in wildflower fields in Valley Center while a toddler ran around — and somehow still got the shot.

What I've learned after all of that? San Diego is one of the most outrageously beautiful places on earth to take photos. And most people only know about three or four spots.

So I'm sharing my full insider list. Ten locations, every vibe, with notes on the best light, who each spot is perfect for, and what to watch out for. Bookmark this one — you're going to come back to it.

1. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park — Ocean Beach

If you've seen a dramatic San Diego photo with crashing waves and golden cliffs, it was probably taken here. Sunset Cliffs is moody, cinematic, and absolutely stunning at golden hour — when the light turns everything amber and the ocean goes electric.

Best for: Couples, engagements, elopements

Best light: 45 minutes before sunset — arrive early because parking is a full commitment.

The vibe: Wild, romantic, a little untamed — perfect if you want photos that feel like a movie.

Rachel's tip:Avoid the main overlook on weekends.

2. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve — La Jolla

Towering ancient pines, rust-colored sandstone, and sweeping Pacific Ocean views. Torrey Pines is one of those places that makes you feel like you accidentally wandered into a national park — except it's right here in San Diego.

Best for: Couples, engagements, adventurous families

Best light: Golden hour and early morning — the soft light through the pines is absolutely dreamy.

The vibe: Epic, earthy, adventurous — great for couples who want something that doesn't look like a typical beach session

Rachel's tip: The Razor Point trail leads to cliffs overlooking the ocean that are genuinely jaw-dropping.

3. La Jolla Cove & Coastline — La Jolla

The iconic tide pools, sea caves, blue-green water, and the famous lighthouse at Cabrillo National Monument nearby — La Jolla's coastline is endlessly photogenic. It's one of my most-requested areas for engagement sessions and honestly? Every time I shoot there I fall in love with it again.

Best for: Engagements, couples, maternity, families

Best light: Late afternoon into golden hour.

The vibe:Romantic, coastal, a little editorial

Rachel's tip: The Children's Pool area and the cove overlook are beautiful but crowded.

4. Balboa Park — Downtown San Diego

Balboa Park is like someone took every possible backdrop — Spanish colonial architecture, rose gardens, lily ponds, eucalyptus groves, and open lawns — and put them all in one place. It's incredibly versatile and honestly underrated for photos because people think it'll look "too busy." It won't. It'll look stunning.

Best for: Families, engagements, couples, maternity

Best light: Early morning (before the crowds) or golden hour on the west-facing gardens

The vibe: Timeless, elegant, lush — works for every aesthetic from romantic to playful

Rachel's tip:The Alcazar Garden and the area behind the Museum of Art have the most beautiful archways and tile work. Weekday mornings are a hidden gem — you'll practically have the place to yourself.

5. Julian — San Diego Mountains

About an hour east of downtown, Julian feels like a completely different world. Rolling golden hills, oak trees, apple orchards, and mountain light that is unlike anything you'll find near the coast. When I say the light in Julian is cinematic, I mean it will genuinely make you cry.

Best for: Engagements, couples, elopements, adventurous families

Best light: Sunrise and golden hour — the hills glow amber in a way that feels unreal

The vibe: Rustic, romantic, adventurous, wildly beautiful

Rachel's tip: Spring and fall are peak seasons for a reason — the wildflowers and fall foliage are incredible. But honestly? Julian is gorgeous year-round. Plan to make a day of it and grab apple pie while you're there or eat at Julian Beer Co. for the best pizza! Non-negotiable.

6. Valley Center — North San Diego County

This one's a local secret and I'm a little protective of it. Valley Center has rolling ranch land, lavender farms, avocado groves, and that wild, open Southern California landscape that feels like it belongs in a film. I photographed a maternity session out here once and I still think about those images.

Best for: Maternity, families, couples, styled shoots

Best light: Golden hour — the fields light up like something out of a dream

The vibe: Earthy, romantic, wide open — perfect for a session with big sky and room to breathe

Rachel's tip:Spring is spectacular when the wildflowers are blooming. Call ahead if you want access to any of the farm properties — most owners are incredibly welcoming to photographers with permission.

7. Carlsbad Flower Fields — Carlsbad

Okay this one has a short window — the fields are typically open late February through early May — but oh my goodness, are they worth planning around. Rows and rows of giant ranunculus flowers in every shade of pink, orange, red, and yellow, with the Pacific Ocean in the distance. It's like walking into a painting.

Best for: Families, maternity, couples, engagements

Best light: Morning light is softer and more flattering — plus fewer crowds

The vibe: Whimsical, colorful, joyful — pure magic especially for little kids.

Rachel's tip: There's an admission fee to enter the fields. Book your session in the morning on a weekday if possible — weekends in peak bloom can get very crowded. Wear coordinating colors that won't compete with the flowers (neutrals and soft tones work beautifully here).

8. Cabrillo National Monument — Point Loma

The historic lighthouse, panoramic views of the San Diego Bay and downtown skyline, and rugged coastal bluffs all in one spot. Cabrillo has a national park permit requirement for commercial photography, so plan ahead — but it is absolutely worth it.

Best for: Engagements, couples, elopements

Best light: Golden hour — the lighthouse and the bay views are stunning in warm light

The vibe: Historic, cinematic, sweeping — great for couples who want something dramatic and unique

Rachel's tip: The bayside trail on the west side of the monument has incredible views with way less foot traffic than the lighthouse area. It's also perfect for elopements — intimate, quiet, and absolutely breathtaking.

9. Batiquitos Lagoon — Carlsbad

This one is for the families and the maternity mamas who want something lush, peaceful, and a little unexpected. Batiquitos Lagoon is a coastal wetland nature preserve with walking trails, wildflowers, and the most beautiful soft green-and-gold light you've ever seen filtering through the reeds. It's gentle, quiet, and incredibly photogenic.

Best for: Families, maternity and couples

Best light: Late afternoon — the lagoon light is softest and warmest in the hour before sunset

The vibe: Peaceful, nature-forward, lush — feels like a secret garden

Rachel's tip: The east trailhead near Gabbiano Lane is my favorite entry point. The path opens up quickly and you get the best variety of backdrops in the shortest distance.

10. Temecula Wine Country — Temecula

Okay, technically this is about 60 miles north of downtown San Diego, but it is 100% worth the drive and I will die on this hill. Vineyard rows stretching to the horizon, rolling golden hills, old oak trees, and that warm wine country light that makes everything look expensive and romantic. Wedding clients choose Temecula for a reason.

Best for: Engagements, couples, weddings, anniversary sessions

Best light: Golden hour — the vineyard rows glow in a way that is genuinely unforgettable

The vibe: Romantic, elevated, wine-country dreamy — perfect for couples who want something that feels like Tuscany but is a quick drive from home

Rachel's tip: Many Temecula wineries require a photography permit or booking fee for sessions on their property — always reach out ahead of time. Some of my favorites to work with are Ponte Winery, Wiens Family Cellars, and South Coast Winery. And yes, you should absolutely stay for wine after. It's basically mandatory.
